Choosing to Fight Cancer

In reading this blog, you might ask, why the women of Gamma Chi Delta chose the American Cancer Society to be the beneficiary of their annual concert, and the answer is touching. While planning their inaugural concert, the club had two young women who were cancer survivors. Their friends and sisters wanted to give to a cause that was actively searching for treatments and cures to cancer. Additionally, the young women realized that nearly everyone has been touched by cancer, either by having it themselves or knowing someone who has it currently or in the past. With the many forms of cancer that plague people each and every year, fighting cancer is a cause we can all get behind.

While Gammas do give all concert proceeds to the American Cancer Society a generous portion of the funds are specifically allocated towards the American Cancer Society's Camp Discovery. Camp Discovery is a week-long overnight summer camp for pediatric cancer patients. During this week away from the hospitals, these young children have the opportunity to experience the joys that summer brings much like healthy children. They participate in all of the fun activitities that camp has to offer: archery, swimming, camping out, and dances. For these children, Camp Discovery is a chance to escape and enjoy being a young.

FUNdraising for the Concert

As the semester is now in full swing, the women of Gamma Chi Delta as well as its sponsoring organizations will begin fundraising for the concert. The upcoming concert is scheduled for January 22nd, and promises to be bigger and better than ever!

So how does Gamma Chi Delta and the Concert for the Cure Foundation fundraise? Well, by having FUN of course! A favorite fundraiser has been and continues to be parties hosted by Gamma Chi Delta at Tycoon Flats, which is perhaps better known simply as “Flats.” Flats has long been a Trinity tradition as a local hangout and burger joint. These parties feature great local music, drink specials, and of course the Trinity community. For just a $5 cover charge, students, faculty, staff, and the general public help to raise money for the Concert for the Cure. The first party of the semester is scheduled on October 15 (the Thursday of Fall Break), and second follow-up party on November 12. The women of Gamma Chi Delta as well as all the members of the Concert for the Cure Foundation hope to see you there!

While Flats parties are a highlight of our fundraising strategy, working concession stands at Trinity sporting events has always been an enjoyable way to be involved in school spirit while participating in service oriented event. In the past, Gammas have worked during soccer, basketball, and volleyball games. All snacks and drinks paid for in cash go towards the Concert for the Cure and Camp Discovery.
