5th Annual Concert for the Cure

As the end of November draws near, and students begin to prepare for the most academically challenging part of the semester, the Concert for the Cure is also that much closer to coming to fruition. Exciting new details have been solidified regarding the location and band for the 2010 concert. The 5th Annual Concert for the Cure featuring Reckless Kelly will be held at Cowboys Dance Hall on January 22, 2010.

The process of planning an event the magnitude of the Concert for the Cure is one that requires negotiating with many country music bands. The challenge lies in not only selecting an affordable band but also in choosing a band that has wide appeal for country music experts as well as those who seldom listen to this music genre. Reckless Kelly, a familiar band from Texas, is a perfect fit for this year’s concert. With hits titled, “Nobody’s Girl” and “Fast Eddie’s Last Hurrah” Reckless is sure to put on a show that will please all in attendance.

Cowboys Dance Hall is well-known locale for country-western fans of all ages in the San Antonio area. In fact, many Trinity students dress up and attend their weekly College Night for an evening full of fun, dancing, and country music. The size, atmosphere, and overall appeal of Cowboys Dance Hall make it the perfect location to host Concert for the Cure.

The Concert for the Cure Committee is excited for the coming concert and hopes that you too will be in attendance! Tickets for the concert will go on sale soon. Trinity students, faculty, and staff will be able to purchase tickets on campus, while those outside of the Trinity community will be able to purchase tickets through Cowboys Dance Hall. We hope to see you there!

Getting Involved

If you’re a part of the Trinity community, you may now have attended a Concert for the Cure fundraiser such as a party at Tycoon Flats or eaten food from the concession stands. Even if you’ve only read about the Concert for the Cure, you may also be wondering “How do I get involved?”

The Concert for the Cure has become a Trinity tradition that all students, faculty, and staff look forward to. Through the work of the diverse Trinity student body, the concert displays the hard-working and persistent personality that is characteristic of Trinity. Although the Concert for the Cure began as an event sponsored only by Gamma Chi Delta, the subsequent foundation has been supported by on-campus organizations as well as local businesses and hospitals. Sponsoring campus organizations including TIGER Council, Spurs Sorority, Phi Sigma Chi, Omega Phi, and Iota Chi Rho have all pledged to take on the challenge to raise money to put on this concert. The costs of the bands as well as their production costs and location must be covered so that all ticket sales can go to support the American Cancer Society and Camp Discovery. All organizations on campus are invited to become sponsors of the 5th Annual Concert for the Cure. Individuals are also welcome to participate. If you’re interested in getting involved either as an individual or as an organization please contact Mackenzie Kelly at mackenzie.kelly@trinity.edu.

Choosing to Fight Cancer

In reading this blog, you might ask, why the women of Gamma Chi Delta chose the American Cancer Society to be the beneficiary of their annual concert, and the answer is touching. While planning their inaugural concert, the club had two young women who were cancer survivors. Their friends and sisters wanted to give to a cause that was actively searching for treatments and cures to cancer. Additionally, the young women realized that nearly everyone has been touched by cancer, either by having it themselves or knowing someone who has it currently or in the past. With the many forms of cancer that plague people each and every year, fighting cancer is a cause we can all get behind.

While Gammas do give all concert proceeds to the American Cancer Society a generous portion of the funds are specifically allocated towards the American Cancer Society's Camp Discovery. Camp Discovery is a week-long overnight summer camp for pediatric cancer patients. During this week away from the hospitals, these young children have the opportunity to experience the joys that summer brings much like healthy children. They participate in all of the fun activitities that camp has to offer: archery, swimming, camping out, and dances. For these children, Camp Discovery is a chance to escape and enjoy being a young.

FUNdraising for the Concert

As the semester is now in full swing, the women of Gamma Chi Delta as well as its sponsoring organizations will begin fundraising for the concert. The upcoming concert is scheduled for January 22nd, and promises to be bigger and better than ever!

So how does Gamma Chi Delta and the Concert for the Cure Foundation fundraise? Well, by having FUN of course! A favorite fundraiser has been and continues to be parties hosted by Gamma Chi Delta at Tycoon Flats, which is perhaps better known simply as “Flats.” Flats has long been a Trinity tradition as a local hangout and burger joint. These parties feature great local music, drink specials, and of course the Trinity community. For just a $5 cover charge, students, faculty, staff, and the general public help to raise money for the Concert for the Cure. The first party of the semester is scheduled on October 15 (the Thursday of Fall Break), and second follow-up party on November 12. The women of Gamma Chi Delta as well as all the members of the Concert for the Cure Foundation hope to see you there!

While Flats parties are a highlight of our fundraising strategy, working concession stands at Trinity sporting events has always been an enjoyable way to be involved in school spirit while participating in service oriented event. In the past, Gammas have worked during soccer, basketball, and volleyball games. All snacks and drinks paid for in cash go towards the Concert for the Cure and Camp Discovery.

What is Concert for the Cure?

Concert for the Cure is an annual country concert that was established by the young women of Gamma Chi Delta, a sorority at Trinity University. At the time of its establishment, Gammas had active members who were cancer survivors, so the club wanted to find a fun way to donate to cancer patients through the American Cancer Society. Since their first concert in 2005 , Gammas has grown the once small, on-campus concert into a city-wide event and a non-profit organization aptly named the Concert for the Cure Foundation. With the new Concert for the Cure Foundation, the women of Gamma Chi Delta are able to invovle other on-campus organizations and clubs to participate in their cause. Each year, all concert proceeds are donated to the American Cancer Society for their Camp Discovery, a summer camp program for pediatric cancer patients. In past years, The Concert for the Cure Foundation, Gammas, and sponsors have donated upwards of $15,000 for these special children.

As a senior Gamma, being involved with the Concert for the Cure has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my time at Trinity. Seeing the effect of the countless hours on others is truly heartwarming. Many campus organizations will be sponsoring different events to raise money for the concert so that all ticket sales will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Some of the events that Gammas will be sponsoring will be Dorm Storm, parties at “Flats,” and concession stands. With these events all students on campus have the opportunity to be part of a truly great cause. We hope that you or even you and your club will want to participate!
